TAKE ME TO THE BLUE before i start to collide Occasionally, Elias' job at the Wizarding Wireless Network required him to do some promoting in different countries to grow the radio station's audience. Promoting sometimes meant working at events or parties, and even though these usually occurred on his days off, he always had fun. Today, he was in a village outside of Paris at a smallish concert of an up-and-coming French wizarding band. The concert was held in a grassy opening of a forest, and both wizards and muggles were in attendance. Security was definitely a visible presence, but it was cool to see people come together for the sake of music.
Eli had brought stickers and little trinkets like fake wands with the WWN logo and branded sunglasses to pass out to the attendees before the concert began. That was really his only purpose here. Once his supplies had run out, he was free to enjoy the band, and they ended up being really good. He made a mental note to feature them on an upcoming radio show of his.
As the show came to a close, Eli wandered to the outskirts of the open field near the forest. The sun would set before too long, and he figured he might as well explore the village before apparating back home. After all, he didn't have much else going on, and it wasn't likely that he would ever come back to this village, let alone this forest. There were tons of flowers and strange-looking plants surrounding the field, almost like a fence. He knew next to nothing about foliage; Herbology had been one of his worst subjects, but they looked interesting - almost fake, even. He walked around looking at them, but kept a safe distance away in case they were poisonous. The last thing he wanted to do was be rushed to the hospital from touching something he shouldn't have.
Listening to the final chords of a song, Eli noticed up ahead that someone else was observing the plants, albeit more in-depth than he. He walked closer, and realized that he knew this man. "Rian Ryland?" He called out. The Hogwarts graduate was a few years older than he, but Eli knew him from Quidditch - as commentator, it obviously had been his job to know all of the Quidditch players. The former Hufflepuff also had a reputation for talking anyone and everyone's ear off; while that may have been an annoyance to some, Eli had always found Rian fascinating to talk to. "It's been a while! How's it going, mate?" He said, as if they were old friends. In reality, Elias had been a third-year the last time they spoke, so it was entirely possible that he didn't remember him. That didn't really faze him, though; Eli was up for talking to and hanging out with pretty much anyone.

non exspectare huius Rian was doing Rian things. That was an expression that he had actually been able to get away with using for years to describe his actions. When he had been a child and teenager it was the way adults referred to whatever it was that he was getting up to. Oh growing plants in a closet? That was just Rian doing Rian things. Not showering for three days and having every inch of his body covered in dirt and grim, just Rian doing Rian things. Trying to find a way to start another green house inside the castle dungeons even though that's probably the worst idea ever? Obviously it was just Rian doing Rian things. It was an easy way to describe his behavior without actually trying to figure it out on some level. It was lazy although Rian supposed he was pretty okay with it because it let him get away with a lot of stuff.
Now that he was older though that wasn’t really an answer to anything. He had accountability. Accountability sucked. He had to have reasons for doing at least some of the things he did because of work or Nova, although if he was being honest having to have reasons because of Nova was probably the best reason to have reasons. Rian had no idea whether or not that made much sense but to him it did and given that no one else had to hear a word he said that was just fine with him. Well not totally fine for him, he would much rather prefer to be talking to someone.
Rian had been that way since school, well since even before that if he was being honest. He had always been eager and looking to strike up conversation with someone or another and it was something he missed about his current work. His current job meant that he spent a lot of time by himself in the woods and that was why he was at such constant conflict with it. He loved the plants and talking to them and observing and learning about them and pretty much everything the job involved but there was an overwhelming lack of…well, people. Sure there were people who were his colleagues but really those people weren’t ones he saw for more than maybe a half hour a day. It probably would have been less if Rian hadn’t attempted to force conversations.
His train of thought had run off the rails once again. He wasn’t meant to be thinking about any of this. He was meant to be studying this plant. Well he wasn’t meant to be doing that either. He had been home with Nova all day and then had thought of something. That something was the similarities between a plant he had seen in school and one he had seen when he had been out in the jungle earlier that week and he had darted off. Well not darted off. He had kind of half begged Nova to come with but she didn’t seem up for the idea of standing in a field with him on a random night. It was things like that which made Rian worry that she was tiring of him but…that couldn’t be possible, could it?
He didn’t need to think about that though. He needed to figure out if there was a link here. It seemed that fate had another idea for Rian though because just as the boy was finally focusing on his task again he heard a voice. He was like a dog in moments like this. His ears perked up and his neck nearly snapped as he whipped his head to look at the sound of the noise. He noticed music at that moment too. Had that always been there? He liked music but this music in question seemed to be fading which was probably for the best as it was just another thing that could and would pull his attention away from whoever it was talking to him. Well and the task at hand it would pull him away from that too.
Rian knew the boy. His incident with the memory wipe and all those ugly details had occurred before he had met him. He couldn’t remember his name for the life of himself though. He felt bad about that. Rian prided himself on remembering everyone he had met even if that meeting had been several years ago and clearly the boy had remembered his name and Rian soon found himself face to face with the boy. How he had gotten in that position he wasn’t positive but he was there and it was happening. “Hi, it has been awhile which is why I can’t remember your first name. I think it starts with an E or maybe an F? I get the two confused sometimes because of how close together they are in the alphabet, anyway though yeah hi I’m good just here looking at plants and doing Rian things or whatever. What about you? How are you and what are you up to!?” Rian was excited by the chance meeting, what it met he didn’t know but it would probably be great.

TAKE ME TO THE BLUE before i start to collide One of the best perks of promoting the Wizarding Wireless Network at events like parties and concerts was the people he met. Eli was not shy in starting conversations with strangers, which was pretty much a necessity for a job like his. Promoting the radio station often involved actually going up to people and talking about it, and Eli loved that. It was a great way to make friends, even if he never saw that person again. So even though the concert was nearly over and people would be leaving the area soon, Eli felt like striking up a conversation with an old acquaintance rather than go home and do the same old thing he always did after work. Because what were the chances that another Hogwarts graduate would show up in France on the outskirts of a forest? There was no way that Elias could let that opportunity pass by him.
However, it had been a long time since he had spoken to or even thought about Rian. Even the conversations they'd had had been few and far between. So, Elias was entirely taken aback by not only how quickly Rian had arrived in front of him, as if the older man had apparated after immediately being summoned by name, but how much - and how fast - he could talk. Eli took a small step backwards to restore some personal space as he listened to the former Hufflepuff. He waited until Rian was finished talking and had taken a pause before he said, "Yeah, it's cool if you don't remember me. I was like 13 when you graduated." Giving an easy smile, Elias stuck out his hand and introduced himself. "Elias Whitcombe, former Quidditch commentator, current radio DJ and all-around awesome guy. Nice to see you again, Rian. I had forgotten how much you could talk!" He didn't say that last part to be mean or anything; he was just stating the obvious, still a little bit in shock.
Rian had mentioned something about looking at plants which piqued Elias' interest because he, too, had been looking at plants. "Do you look at plants for a job or as a hobby? Are you a Herbologist?" Or perhaps, he had come to this forest to enjoy the concert, and had gotten side-tracked by said plants like Eli had. Whatever Rian's reasoning was, he had to be more knowledgeable about plants than Eli. After all, he had failed his OWLs in Herbology, something that he wasn't proud of, but honestly hadn't been much of a surprise to anyone. Turning around to stare back at the fake-looking, possibly poisonous foliage, Elias asked Rian, "What about these? Are they poisonous or man-made?" Maybe they were edible or had cool magical properties. Eli probably would never know, unless Rian were an expert in Herbology and told him so.
