WE'VE GOT SOMETHING HATEFUL
He was here for a book. That was all. There was no ulterior motive or secret plans. Ellsworth usually didn’t leave the house for less than that. Usually didn’t wake up or bother leaving the four walls of his shop unless there was some kind of something that he could deal with in the world at large. This book was different though. It wasn’t as useful as a secret or some snippet of knowledge that he could use in the world at large to ply some decision to his advantage. It wasn’t something that furthered his agenda at large or made it easier. No it would do none of those things but it was valuable to more people than just himself and he needed to complete a set. Ellsworth did like to make sure things were completed.
It was how he found himself into his current position. There was a certain amount of serenity in the idea and concept that he could complete a plan but people…they were infuriating. It had been five years, five long years since the telecast and they were still in the same place. Sure things were tense and no one wanted to admit that they weren’t as chummy as they should have been but there hadn’t been a defining tipping point. People as always were unpredictable and were throwing wrenches in his plans. They needed to be pushed. Need to be forced forward so that we could get to the next point and then everything would be perfect, well perfect for Ellsworth. Probably not so much so for anyone else.
Lighting a cigarette Ellsworth couldn’t help but loathe the fact that his seller was late. This was bound to happen of course because people were just unpredictable and typically the worst at all things. No one could be trusted and extra steps always had to be taken. That was what was happening in his real life also. He was being forced to reach out and try to pluck those from obscurity who may end up helping his cause. He didn’t want to add anyone to his little family but it seemed like it would end up being necessary. That it would end up being something that was required in the day to day because there were too many factors even for him to control. Things couldn’t always just happen and sometimes things defied the odds.
The tobacco now in his hands was the perfect example of that. It should have died out years ago. Should have been replaced by the healthier options available to all but still it preserved. There were regulations of course that made it so that it was safer for consumption but still it should have been halted by now. Fell to its knees and crumbled by the passing of time and new industry along with new products. That hadn’t happened though. Much like the fragile peace put in place it preserved despite all odds. Some things were just meant to survive unless someone made a real true effort to make the opposite happen.
It seemed that Ellsworth Palmer would be forced to make that effort.
So there Ellsworth sat, smoking and waiting patiently in the pub for the seller to arrive wondering if he would. If he bothered to would he send Elise or Eamon after them? He wasn’t sure. Wasn’t sure if it would be necessary and he could just reschedule. He didn’t need the money immediately that would come from selling the complete set but he also didn’t like being delayed. It was another quandary and his mind was darting as he waited for the person to appear, or to not do so. He had a booth and cigarette and a drink half-forgotten beside him and that was what would have to occupy his time, at least for the time being anyway. Tardiness was ugly though for Merlin’s sake.
