rian romulus ryland the basics full name • Rian Romulus Ryland nicknames • none age • twenty-two birthday • may, twenty-third, 2221 occupation • herbologist house • hufflepuff gender • male sexuality • heterosexual blood status • half the appearance face claim • luke pasqualino height and weight • 6'2" & 172 lbs. identifying features • large burn mark encompassing right shoulder from Fire Seed Bush. Also other various small scars from handling plants. overall appearance • While in his younger years Rian preferred the likes of tank tops and shorts he has learned from trial and error that when out in the field the proper gear is not just dragon hide gloves. Sporting loose shirts still he now wears jackets made from dragon leather while researching plants in the amazon. Now he lets his hair grow until he feels it needs chopping off and repeats the cycle just as he does with his facial hair. Things like grooming seem to escape Rian Ryland as he doesn't see them as necessities. While he can be wrangled into a suit if needed, it is not advised. Rian stands tall and is as lithe as he was when in school. Nothing but skin, bones, and just enough muscle to allow him to climb whatever he may need to. the personality likes • Nova, talking, people, Quidditch, Herbology, creatures, running, any and all foods, experiencing new things, traveling, music festivals, and honesty. dislikes • Silence, most of his classes, competition, mistreatment of natural habitats, hard life choices, dealing with things, and being ignored. strengths • Patient, loyal, constantly amicable, strong flyer, and strong survival skills in nature. weaknesses • Lazy, too curious, rarely has a plan, argumentative, awful at anything that isn't CoMC, Herbology, or Charms, and a serious inability to take a hint. dreams • to discover plant life no one has seen before, to have a healthy home life, and to leave the world better than he found it. fears • not being able to speak, losing Nova, or being forced to confront any kind of emotional trauma again. overall personality • Rian is as talkative as he was in his youth but now he tends to watch his words a bit more. Not that everything doesn't just come pouring out sometimes but he at least can be expected to think before he speaks every now and then. Amicable to a fault Rian tries to find the good in everyone even if their is no true good to be found. He tends to avoid conflict in such and is always the first to apologize although friendly debate is something that he quite enjoys. Nothing really gets Rian mad per say but he does tend to try and avoid having to deal with difficult decisions and life choices head on although recently with Nova by his side things have been a bit better on that front. the history father •Archibald Ryland, forty, journalist mother • Heather Ryland, thirty-nine, Goblin Liaison Office at MoM siblings • None important people/pets • Nadia Irene Ivanova hometown • where you were born, grew up overall history • Rian Ryland's story does not start with his birth but much rather with the meeting of his parents. It is a tired tale on which we embark when it comes to the tale of Rian's parents. The marriage in question was one of a young witch by the name of Heather Brigsby and Archibald Ryland. Young Miss. Brigsby had just finished her formal wizarding education in America and was taking a tour of the world with some friends visiting California, Asia, and lastly Europe all of which was a far cry from her existence in Reynolds, Georgia (population that of a meager 1,036). The United Kingdom was the last stop for Heather and her companions or more so the final one for Heather. It was there that Heather met Archibald Ryland and she immediately fell deeply in love. He returned her affections at first and both at the mere age of eighteen flung themselves into wedded bliss within a month. This was no real surprise to Heather's parents or friends as she had always gone in head first throwing caution to the wind. It was then no surprise to them also how short lived the marriage was. Heather had simply forgotten to tell Archibald she was a witch and after two months of marriage thought that it was better sooner than later to do so. Out of three possible outcomes Archibald took the worst one simply throwing up his hands and claiming that she was crazy. Archibald left, Heather stayed in England to work at the Ministry (A job in the Goblin Liason office already secured), and life seemed as if it would carry on as it had before the marriage except for one small problem. That one small problem of course was the fact that Archibald in those two months of married blissed had managed to impregnant Heather. Heather of course still some what love stricken did not get rid of the child but instead kept the boy that would become Rian. A few short months later Rian was born and to what would in later years become the great disdain of his mother looked almost exactly like his father. The only real difference was his hair which would at least give Heather one sigh of relief as the brown locks began to appear on his head. Heather though continued to work leaving Rian with an elderly neighbor who had throughout her pregnancy helped her. It was nice and it wasn't until Rian turned three that he began to give his mother trouble. Rian had began speaking words a bit earlier than most when he was eleven months old but as most children at that age he wasn't forming any cohesive sentences. He was simply talking which thankfully wasn't too much of a problem, not at first anyway. It was at three that Rian figured out what words and sentences were which at first was a welcome relief to his mother. He was no longer shouting random words or simply screaming for no reason. It was now quite the opposite and Rian's favorite thing until he turned six was questions. It was a nonstop barrage on his mother about how things worked, who was who, how things got that way, and most importantly where was his father. Rian of course had no idea there was supposed to be more than one parent until he turned five and was in a park with the elderly woman who watched him. Her husband had passed away years before and as he saw a child with a male and female parent the questions began spilling out about where was his, as he would put it until he found out about the word dad later that day, person. He wanted one! Rian at the time felt that he was being jipped and it was quite unfair that he didn't have both. This was of course true but Rian had no idea how true it was. Not yet anyway. It would be just before Rian entered preschool that two major events happened in his life both on one sunny summer. The first being his mother's wall of defense against the question of "Where was his dad?" fell in shambles on an afternoon in July. He had abandoned them. That was all that Rian got, no explanation further just that he was gone. It wasn't good enough. It would be then that Rian Ryland displayed his first magically ability. As his mother left the room the tiny boy simply yelled, "TELL ME NOW!" and a vase flew across the room smashing against the wall. A wide eyed Rian immediately wanted to know how he did it and he did as his mother spilled the rest out. It seemed that his looks were the only thing that Rian had inherited from Archibald and nothing more. Rian would receive his letter to Hogwarts when he turned eleven just as his mother expected. Not much had happened since he displayed his first showing of magic and Rian had grown less inquisitive with time but this didn't stop his mouth from running in anyway shape or form. He would enter Hogwarts bright eyed and eager to explore the world of magic so that his whys, whats, and who's could all start flying from his mouth again. Rian found though that this to would only last for a short period of time and that he would become much more eager to instead interact with the people that filled the schools halls. Rian had been homeschooled after his first year of preschool least he show some form of magical ability there so his interaction with people outside of his mother's apartment building was small. Quickly sorted into Hufflepuff Rian felt thrilled to have a whole new lot of people to talk to. It wasn't long before Rian's inquisitive nature became quite focused on certain subjects. As far as Rian was concerned subjects like Potions, Transfiguration, and Defense Against the Dark Arts could all burn. They just weren't fun. There were too many rules, instructions, and "proper" ways to do things. Sure being able to turn into a wolf would have been cool but it wasn't likely he'd need to do that anytime soon. So he slept, didn't pay attention, and otherwise wholly slacked off until it was time for Herbology or Charms which both just seemed more fun. It didn't take long to figure out that Rian was a natural on a broom too. While not the competitive sort, flying just felt right to him and something about pulling out of a dive never felt better than anything else he had ever experienced in his life. Rian was even more eager to get on the team than he was to get into the Greenhouse or to be a third year and take Care of Magical Creatures. It just all seemed right and natural to him, though Rian will never be the sort to care about wins or loses. Things changed in his sixth year though. The statute of secrecy was broken and his father finally wanted to believe his mother because...well the whole world was now. Of course Rian didn’t respond to this too well and his overall unhealthy way of dealing with things finally reared its ugly head and he attempted a memory wipe on himself. It didn’t quite work the way Rian had planned as he still remembered some things but missed others. It seemed a sixteen year old could not pull of the subtly of simply erasing his father. In the midst of all this he met Nova and...well he Rianed it up. He assumed she was a creation of the Room of Requirement even though she wasn't and some how out of all this mess that he had created they ended up together. Rian couldn't be happier even though the memories lingered and the letters reminded him once again that his father was back for real. They finished the school year out and now both seventeen traveled instead of stay at their respective homes. Rian remembered eventually of course. Remembered what he had done and vowed to never do it again or breath a word of it to Nova. Upon graduation Rian was accepted on as an intern in at a Herbology Research center in the amazon. While thrilled with actually getting to do something with his life he was a bit sad that it meant spending time about from Nadia but that was what apparating was for he supposed. While the internship went well in the Amazon Rian found himself transferring to another facility in South Africa as to experience more. While he's finally getting paid for his work he is as always tracking more and more mud into the apartment by the day. the role player alias • rolo age • twenty-seven pronouns • he code • admin edit other characters • rolo l. grant and ellsworth f. palmer |
